To Mayor and Councillors,
I am writing to express my deep concern at your seemingly insensitive imposition of laneway housing on Vancouver neighbourhoods. Property owners in Vancouver feel that you have initiated new zoning regulations near our homes without even token consultation or consideration. It must be obvious to you by now that these regulations lower the quality, security, and enjoyment of our homes. You have already received significant feedback from property owners in the many affected neighbourhoods. Promising a ‘review’ after 100 lanehouses have been built is just not good enough. A mistake has been made on your watch and your conscience should drive you to stop now and reconsider your actions.
There is time to salvage this policy before more damage is done. Your zoning regulations must be revisited and modified to reflect the many concerns of taxpayers who are expressing their alarm at this unexpected neighbourhood intrusion. Why not put a hold on this construction now and ask concerned property owners to submit suggestions for limiting their impact so that the planning department may duly devise acceptable regulations to satisfy everyone?
Vancouver is an extremely desirable city in which to live and we are proud of our livable neighbourhoods. Please don’t destroy what so many past City Councils have nurtured – let’s find a reasonable accommodation before further damage is done. You are our representatives and we expect you to act on our concerns.
I look forward receiving to a positive response to this letter.
